Education is not merely the acquisition of knowledge; it is a holistic process that develops the body, mind, character, and soul of human beings. General Education (GED) plays a vital role in developing well-rounded individuals equipped with knowledge, ethical values, social responsibility, and the skills necessary to contribute meaningfully to sustainable development.
Manarat International University (MIU) introduced General Education courses for all its academic programs in 2001 in accordance with the requirements of the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh. The GED curriculum aims to provide students with multidisciplinary knowledge while cultivating ethics, morality, social values, tolerance, human rights, justice, social harmony, and respect for cultural and religious diversity. These values enable students not only to lead responsible personal lives but also to contribute effectively to the sustainable development of society, the nation, and the global community.
In line with the UGC requirements, General Education courses constitute an important component of undergraduate and graduate education. The Bangladesh Accreditation Council (BAC) also emphasizes the inclusion and effective implementation of GED courses in academic programs as part of the accreditation process. In this regard, MIU has developed a distinctive GED curriculum that incorporates selected Islamic Studies courses alongside other multidisciplinary courses recommended for General Education. This unique combination contributes to the intellectual, moral, and spiritual development of our students.
The positive impact of General Education can be reflected in the qualities expected of MIU graduates—truthfulness, honesty, sincerity, dedication, social responsibility, and a strong work ethic. Through GED courses and co-curricular academic activities, students are encouraged to develop both professional competence and responsible citizenship, preparing them to respond effectively to the challenges of a rapidly changing world.
Initially, GED courses at MIU were administered under the Department of Business Administration. Subsequently, on June 23, 2015, the University established the Center for General Education (CGED) as a separate academic entity through a special order of the University authority to ensure the effective and coordinated management of GED courses. Since then, CGED has been responsible for providing General Education courses to students across all academic programs of the University.
At present, CGED is supported by highly qualified regular faculty members with advanced academic degrees and professional training both at home and abroad. In addition, a number of distinguished adjunct faculty members from various public and private universities contribute to the Center's academic activities. Since its establishment as a separate entity, the Center has evolved from being coordinated by a Coordinator to being headed by a Director since December 30, 2023.
CGED is committed not only to classroom teaching but also to creating opportunities for broader academic and personal development. The Center organizes seminars, symposiums, workshops, language courses, academic tours, conferences, and other educational activities designed to enhance students' knowledge, skills, ethical values, leadership qualities, and social awareness.
The Center for General Education (CGED) therefore seeks to contribute to the realization of the vision and mission of Manarat International University by developing educated, ethical, responsible, and socially conscious graduates.
I sincerely hope that CGED will continue to strengthen its academic activities and play an increasingly significant role in preparing our students to become competent professionals, responsible citizens, and valuable contributors to the nation and the global community.
